The Tech Schools initiative delivers innovative education programs which give secondary students opportunities to work on real-world problems, side-by-side with industry and subject experts, using the latest technology.
They are built on TAFE or university campuses to introduce secondary school students to post-secondary pathways. Each Tech School's programs link with local industry needs and offer a unique learning environment.
The role of my local school
If your local school is in a Tech School location and part of the local partnership group, your students can participate in programs at the Tech School. Check if your school is in a Tech School .
Tech Schools enable students to take part in programs and use high-tech equipment they would not normally be able to access at their school. These complement the education they are already receiving and are mapped to the Victorian Curriculum.
Tech Schools are open to students from their local government, Catholic and independent schools.
Tech Schools do not offer trade training or qualifications.
High-tech learning centres shared by local partner schools
Tech Schools are innovative, shared learning environments that are managed and operated in partnership with local schools, local government, TAFE, university and industry.
Students remain enrolled in their local schools but attend classes at a Tech School campus that can be accessed by government and non-government schools in the local area.
Koorie STEM camps
The Tech Schools Koorie STEM camps provide out-of-school learning experiences to Koorie students. The camps blend traditional Koorie technology and modern technology and are delivered through Koorie perspectives in an environment intended to stimulate students' interest in STEM and STEM-related subjects and careers.
The objective of the project are to:
- Deliver age and culturally appropriate camps over multiple days, in partnership with the Tech Schools and the Koorie Academies of Excellence, to ignite interest in STEM.
- Support Koorie young people and their families/carers to understand pathways into post-school education, particularly STEM related opportunities.
Rural and regional STEM camps
The Victorian Government provided $1.4 million for Tech Schools to design and test immersive STEM programs for Year 7 to 10 students from rural and regional Local Government Areas (LGAs) without Tech School facilities.
This initiative was developed in response to the recommendations of the Expert Advisory for Rural and Regional , using participation in Tech School programs to lift aspirations in STEM, inspire development of 21st century skills and increase exposure to STEM career pathways.
Design2Innovate teacher professional learning
Developed by Tech Schools in partnership with the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership (formerly Bastow), Victorian teachers and international design thinking experts, 'Design2Innovate: introduction to design thinking' supports middle learners and classroom teachers to become more confident in using design thinking in classroom, school curriculum and leadership practice.
Over three days across a semester, Victorian teachers engage in hands-on learning, deepen their creative thinking and problem-solving skills, and collaborate with peers and Tech Schools.
Participants learn how to use design thinking to enhance student-led learning, building 21st century skills, and facilitate cultural change in their school.
