The history of Armstrongs State School

  • 1865

Armstrongs opened as a common school in 1865. The first head teacher was G.S. Nason.

His wife taught needlework and they lived in a timber house next to the school.

The weatherboard schoolhouse had an open veranda running the full length of one side.

It was an important building for the community.

It was used by two churches and by the tennis club, cricket club, and the fire brigade.

  • 1870s

The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1937

The weatherboard building was demolished in 1937. It was replaced by a school building moved from Salt Creek State School No. 2334.

  • 1948

Armstrongs closed in 1948. The school building was moved to Ararat High School (No. 7520). The last head teacher at Armstrongs was Neil Treweek.
