The history of Bagshot Primary School
1867
Bagshot opened as a common school in 1867.
The first head teacher was John Osborne and 25 students were enrolled.
The school replaced a private school that was held in a barn and the teacher was Carter.
Local residents decided to raised money to build a school.
They also requested the Government's help. For every pound the community raised, the Government also contributed a pound.
1868
By 1868 enrolments had increased to 68 students.
1911
The school building served as the district's focal point for social events.
This was until Bagshot Hall was built in 1911.
The school was close to the Bendigo Creek and subject to flooding. Levee banks were constructed to help prevent this.
Residents built a shelter shed in the school grounds. The shed commemorated the coronation of King George V.
1938
The school closed in 1938 due to low student numbers. The head teacher at that time was Baker.
1944
The school reopened. The head teacher was Miss Hutchinson.
Head teachers that would follow her were:
- Miss Threlfall
- Miss Wheeler
- Mr Nicholson
- Mr Hare
- Mr Jackson
- Mr Goddrich
- Mr Jenkins
- Mr Johns
- Mr Martyn
- Mr Hyland
1970s
The name of the school changed to Bagshot Primary School in 1970.
It is not known when the school closed. It was still open in the early 1970s.
