The history of Hawkesdale Primary School

  • 1866

Hawkesdale opened as a common school in 1866.

The schoolhouse was a one-room bluestone building.

The first head teacher was Margaret Woodlock who taught around 30 students.

  • 1870s

The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1926

A new larger schoolhouse and teacher's house was built. The old school building was converted into a shelter shed.

  • 1931

The bluestone shelter shed had become unsafe and was demolished.

  • 1934

The school's head teacher organised for a group of 14 local schools to come together to play sport.

  • 1941

The number of students enrolled had grown and the school was not big enough.

The supper hall of a local church was used as another classroom.

  • 1956

Student numbers were increasing and a much bigger school on a new site in Austin St was built. This was because farming land had been given to soldiers who had fought in the second World War and more families were moving into the area.

  • 1970

The number of students enrolled at the school in 1970 was 220. There were seven staff.

The school was renamed Hawkesdale Primary School.

  • 1993

Hawkesdale Primary School closed in 1993 when it combined with Hawkesdale Secondary College (No. 7895) to form Hawkesdale P-12 College (5434).
