The history of Romsey Primary School
1858
The school opened in 1858.
1862
The school became a common school in 1862.
1865
A weatherboard school was built in 1865. The head teacher at the time was McConnell.
1868
There were 77 enrolled at Romsey Common School in 1868.
1870s
A. N. Thomas became head teacher in 1870 and stayed at the school for 30 years.
The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.
1900
Head teacher McConnell retired in 1900 after 30 years teaching at the school. C. Harrison became head teacher.
1928
The school held a ‘Back to School' event in 1928. A presentation was made to George Seymour, the oldest ex-student who had attended the original school about 1860.
1970s to 1980s
The school was renamed Romsey Primary School in 1970. Portable classrooms were added in the 1970s and 1980s.
Vacant land on the northern side of Palmer Street was purchased in the 1980s.
1994
A new school was built on Station Street and opened in 1994.
1998
A performing arts room was added in 1998.
2021
The school was remodelled in 2021. This included a multi-purpose space incorporating STEM, a kitchen and performing arts area.
2022
Romsey Primary School is still operation.
