The history of Trawalla Primary School

  • 1870s

    Trawalla opened as a common school 1871. The first head teacher was Alfred John Evans. Classes were held in a stone building. Students were from local mining families. The original school site was very low-lying ground and suffered constant flooding.

    A new weatherboard building with a teacher's residence were built in 1872. The school was located on the intersection of Ballarat-Beaufort Rd and Mount Emu Creek.

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1880s

    James Scullin, who became the 9th Prime Minister of Australia, attended the school between 1881 and 1887.

  • 1961

    A new school was built in 1961. It was diagonally across from the old school building.

  • 1970

    The school was renamed Trawalla Primary School in 1970.

  • 2022

    Trawalla Primary School is still in operation.
