The history of Whroo State School

  • 1850s

    Whroo opened as a national school in 1858.

    The first head teacher was Thomas Meagher. He was a miner but he had been to school. This was unusual for the miners in the area at this time.

    A schoolhouse was built.

  • 1860

    Elizabeth Gyle became work mistress to help Thomas Meagher. When Elizabeth married, she was replaced by Ann Bergin.

  • 1862

    The school became a common school in 1862.

  • 1870s

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1941

    Whroo State School closed in 1941.
