The history of Harrietville Primary School

  • 1866

    Harrietville opened as a common school in 1866. The head teacher was David B. Young.

  • 1870s

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1900

    By around 1900, there were 300 students enrolled at the school and five teachers.

  • 1912

    The original school was renovated. A house for the teacher was built. The first schoolhouse was kept as a classroom.

  • 1921

    Several local mines closed. The number of students enrolled at the school dropped to about 60 as mining families moved away.

  • 1957

    The number of students enrolled at the school dropped below 20.

  • 1970

    The school was renamed Harrietville Primary School in 1970.

  • 2022

    Harrietville Primary School is still in operation.
