The history of Mountain Hut State School
1863
Mountain Hut opened as a rural school in 1863.
The head teacher was Jane Piper.
The timber schoolhouse had a bark roof and a clay floor.
The average number of students going to the school was 40.
1868
This school became a common school in 1868.
A large building was provided to be used as the schoolhouse. It had previously been used as a storehouse.
The average number of students going to the school was 46.
The head teacher was John Maxwell.
1870s
The schoolhouse was destroyed by fire in June 1870.
Classes were held in a hut while a new schoolhouse was built.
There were 52 students enrolled during this time.
The new hardwood schoolhouse was finished in 1871. It had a shingle roof.
This school became a state school between 1873 and 1878.
1883
There were only 7 students enrolled at the school in 1883.
1885
Mountain Hut State School closed in 1885.
