The history of Camperdown Primary School

  • 1854

Camperdown was opened in 1854 as a boarding school. Students lived at the school.

The bluestone building had two classrooms and a dining room. It also had dormitories at each end.

The first teachers were Mr and Mrs Mathers.

The school replaced an older slab hut classroom that had been opened since 1853.

  • 1860

There were 72 students enrolled by 1860 but most were not boarding at the school.

The school became a day school only. The two dormitories were converted into an infant's school and an ordinary classroom. An infant's school is a school for very young children.

  • 1862

The school became a common school in 1862.

The head teacher was Ednott Burbank and his wife was work mistress.

  • 1870s

The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1965

The school building was destroyed by fire in 1965. It was replaced by a cream brick school with 9 classrooms.

The Premier of Victoria, Sir Henry Bolte, opened this new school on 12 November 1965.

The head teacher at the time was F.J Fiscalini.

  • 1970

The school was renamed Camperdown Primary School in 1970.

  • 1994

The school closed in 1994 when it combined with Camperdown High School (No. 7685) to form Camperdown P-12 College (6259).

Camperdown Primary School became a campus of the new school.
