The history of East Prahran State School

  • 1854

East Prahran opened as a Free Presbyterian Denominational school in 1854.

The first head teacher was Mr Fleming.

  • 1855

In 1855 William Neilson became head teacher and his wife Jessie Nelson was his assistant.

  • 1870s

The school was a state school in the 1870s and the Department of Education took over the lease for the building.

  • 1874

    The school closed in 1874.

The original teachers, Henry and Jessie Neilson were still at the school when it closed.

A new teacher, Margaret Neilson, was also at the school. It is likely that Margaret was Henry and Jessie's daughter.
