The history of Eastville Primary School

  • 1873

    The school opened as a state school in 1873. It was originally called Bradford Creek. The head teacher was W. Bass and there were 25 students enrolled.

    The building was made from slab cut timber (slab hut) with a bark roof.

  • 1874

    A new weatherboard building with a shingle roof and an attached teacher's house was built in 1874.

  • 1880

    The school was renamed Eastville in 1880 because there was a school nearby called Bradford State School.

  • 1894

    The school closed in April 1894 but reopened in July to work part time with Bradford State School (No. 2193).  It shared its only teacher with Bradford and the teacher split their time between both schools. 

  • 1898

    With 36 students the Eastville was able to operate full time again.

  • 1903

    The shingle roof was replaced with galvanised iron.

  • 1909

    The school building was renovated.

  • 1924

    The school was renovated in 1924. The students went to Laanecoorie State School (No. 733) while the work was completed. 

  • 1936

    The school closed again for 4 years.

  • 1940

    There were enough students to reopen the school in 1940.

  • 1970

    The name of the school changed to Eastville Primary School in 1970.

  • 1996

    The school closed in 1996.
