The history of Emerald Hill Common School

  • 1853

    Emerald Hill opened as a national school in 1853.

    It was originally called Canvastown School. The school was located on Clarendon Street on the corner of Banks Street.

    The first head teacher was Josiah N Hassall. 

  • 1877

    The school closed in 1877 and was replaced by South Melbourne (Eastern Road) State School No. 1852.
