The history of Grant State School

  • 1866

    Grant opened as a common school in 1866 for children from local mining families.

    There were 42 students enrolled.

    Classes were held in a wooden building with a shingle roof.

    The head teacher was William Pepper.

  • 1870s

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1890

    The number of students enrolled had fallen to six and Grant State School closed.
