The history of McCallum's Creek State School

  • 1870

McCallum's Creek opened as a common school in 1870.

The head teacher was Horatio Phillips.

It replaced McCallum's Creek Common School No. 448, which was opened as a Church of England school in 1860.

The new school was built 180m from the original school on a one-acre site.

The school was a two-room bluestone building with an iron roof.

By 1876 the average enrolment was between 125 and 150.

  • 1880s

A teacher's house was built in 1887 with 4 rooms, when 150 students attended the school.

By 1888, enrolment had increased to 192.

  • 1906

Enrolment had reduced to between 80 and 90 students.

  • 1941

    The school closed.

Cecil Hunt was head teacher at that time.
