The history of Metcalfe Primary School

  • 1866

    Metcalfe opened as a common school in 1866.

    The first head teacher was Mr Matthew H. Wait.

    The average attendance during the first year reached 30 students.

    The original brick building was described as 'substantial'.

    There was also a two-room teacher's house.

  • 1913

    In 1913 a new school building and house were built near the original site.

  • 1928

    In 1928 a timber plantation was established.

  • 1966

    In 1966 the school celebrated its 100th anniversary.

    The local community presented the school with memorial gates to celebrate.

  • 1970s

    The name of the school changed to Metcalfe Primary School in 1970.

    The school and teacher's house were renovated in the 1970s.

  • 1993

    The school closed in 1993. 

    The school building was moved to Taradale Primary School (No. 614).
