The history of Modewarre Primary School

  • 1859

    Modewarre School opened as a national school in 1859.

    The head teacher was Samuel Barber.

  • 1862

    Modewarre school became a common school in 1862.

    The head teacher was George Shugg. He remained head teacher until the 1880s.

  • 1870s

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1959

    The school commemorated its 100th anniversary in 1959. Two of the guests were students when George Shugg was head teacher.

    There were only around 12 students enrolled at the school in 1959.

  • 1970

    The school was renamed Modewarre Primary School in 1970.

  • 1971

    Modewarre Primary School closed in 1971.
