The history of Mount Cameron State School

  • 1869

Mount Cameron opened as a common school in 1869 for the children of local farmers. The first head teacher was Joseph Wilson.

Classes were held in a wooden schoolhouse with a zinc roof.

  • 1870

The schoolhouse was destroyed in a storm in 1870 when the head teacher was Dugald McPhee. It was replaced with a larger schoolhouse that was lined with pine and had a galvanised iron roof.

  • 1871

The average number of students going to school was 30.

  • 1872

A house was built for the head teacher. It had 2 rooms and another 2 rooms were added later.

  • 1873

The school became a state school in 1873.

  • 1877

Annie Ferris became the head teacher in 1877.

  • 1883

The number of students enrolled at the school had fallen to 23.

  • 1888

Because student numbers were low, the school became part time. Mount Cameron shared the teacher with Red Lion State School (No.850). The teacher taught across both schools but chose to live at Red Lion School.

The teacher's house at Mount Cameron became run down. There were 15 students who attended both schools.

  • 1900

Mount Cameron State School closed in 1900 because there were not enough students.
