The history of Mount Prospect Primary School

  • 1862

    Mount Prospect opened as a Presbyterian school.

    The first head teacher was James Cameron.

  • 1863

    There were 35 students enrolled, including 18 girls and 17 boys.

    It had an average attendance of 22 students, including 12 boys and 10 girls.

  • 1870s

    The head teacher was Robert Murray who started at the school in 1871 and stayed until 1876.

    In 1873 the Department of Education bought the school and teachers house from the church.

    The school expanded into Crown land next door in 1874. The school later became a state school.

    The wooden school building measured 34 ft by 19 ft (approximately 10 by 6 m). The teachers house next door had 7 rooms.

    Following repairs to the building the school could now accommodate 72 students.

  • 1891

    A new wooden teachers house with four rooms was built. This detached building replaced the old house.

  • 1907

    Another new school building was constructed.

    This measured 20 ft by 20 ft (approximately 6 by 6 m) and had an attached porch.

  • 1950

    The school closed.

  • 1961

    The school reopened.

  • 1970

    The name of the school changed to Mount Prospect Primary School. 

  • 1993

    The school closed due to low student enrolments.
