The history of Tylden Primary School

  • 1861

    Tylden opened as a national school in 1861.

    The first head teacher was McAuley.

  • 1862

    Tylden became a common school.

    There were 50 students enrolled at the time.

  • 1864

    Land to build a new school was bought.

  • 1871

    A one room brick schoolhouse was completed.

  • 1873

    Tylden Common School became a state school.

  • 1890

    A teacher's house was built on the west of the school site.

    The shingle roof of the school building was replaced with iron.

  • 1916

  • 1963

    The teacher's house was removed.

  • 1968

    An extra classroom was added.

    The classroom was needed when other schools in the area closed (East Trentham, North Blackwood, Chanter's Lane and Spring Hill).

  • 2004

    A new building was added. It included three classrooms and a library.

  • 2012

    Tylden marked its 150th anniversary.

    The original bell tower was refurbished for the occasion. It was moved to the front of the administration building.

  • 2013

    A kitchen garden program started.

  • 2022

    Tylden Primary School is still in operation.

    The original school building is now used as an Art Studio. The original bell is still rung at the end of the day.
