The history of Wedderburn Korong Vale Primary School

  • 1865

Wedderburn School opened as a common school in 1865.

The first head teacher was Joseph Lockhart and there were 95 students enrolled in the first year the school opened (61 boys and 34 girls).

  • 1870s

This school became a state school between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1908

The school buildings were renovated and new brick buildings were built.

  • 1940s

Local parents requested wider classes for older students. A new building was opened with equipment to teach cookery, needlecraft, home management and woodwork.

A new teacher was shared with Charlton State School (No. 1480) and Inglewood State School (No. 1052).

In 1945 classes for older students were added. These grades were called forms and were for students the same age as students in years 7, 8 and 9 now.

Students now travelled to the school from the surrounding areas of Borung, Korong Vale, Wedderburn Junction, Wehla, Fenton's Creek and Kurraca.

The school became a Higher Elementary School in 1948. This is what schools that had forms were called at the time.

  • 1952

The size of the school was growing. School buildings were moved to Wedderburn Korong Vale from Salisbury West State School (No. 1773), Yeungroon State School (No. 1942), Yarraberb State School (No. 2160), and Richmond Plains State School (No. 2040). Another weatherboard room was built as the cookery centre.

  • 1961

Wedderburn High School opened in 1961. It is likely classes for older students would have moved to the high school at this time.

  • 1970

The name of the school changed to Wedderburn Primary School in 1970.

  • 1998

Wedderburn Primary School combined with Korong Vale Primary School (No. 1800) in January 1998. Its name changed to Wedderburn Korong Vale Primary School.

Wedderburn Korong Vale Primary School closed in December 1998 when it combined with Wedderburn High School (No. 8460) to form Wedderburn P-12 College.

  • 1999

Wedderburn P-12 College opened in January 1999. Wedderburn Korong Vale Primary School became the junior campus of the new school.

  • 2001

The junior campus closed in 2001.
