The history of Yendon Primary School

  • 1864

    The school opened as a common school in 1864. When the school opened it was known as Buninyong East.

    The first head teacher was Mary Pakenham and there were 34 students enrolled (18 girls and 16 boys).

  • 1873

    This school became a state school in 1873.

  • 1875

    Another room was added to the schoolhouse in 1875 so that the school was big enough for 100 students.

  • 1877

    The average number of students going to the school in 1877 was 89.

  • 1878

    The name of the school was changed to Yendon around this time.

  • 1914

    The schoolhouse and the teacher's house were demolished. It was replaced with a new 2 room building.

  • 1924

    The teacher's house was replaced in 1924.

  • 1948

    A pine tree plantation was established. When grown, the trees would be sold and the money used by the school to buy a piano and improve the grounds.

  • 1950

    The smaller of the 2 rooms in the schoolhouse was moved to Bungal State School (No. 1155) in 1950. The Bungal schoolhouse had been destroyed by fire.

  • 1964

    A celebration was held to mark the school being open for 100 years. Around 400 former teachers, students, and friends attended.

  • 1969

    There were 25 students enrolled at the school in 1969.

  • 1970

    The name of the school changed to Yendon Primary School in 1970. 

  • 1993

    Yendon Primary School closed in 1993.
