The history of Tourello Primary School

  • 1864

    The school was opened as a common school in 1864. It was called Sheepwash when it opened.

    The first head teacher was James Ballantine.

    There were 45 students enrolled at the school when it opened. There was an average of 36 students going to school in the first year (18 girls and 18 boys).

    The schoolhouse was big enough for 60 students. There was also a house for the teacher.

  • 1865

    There were now 55 students enrolled and the average number of students going to school in 1865 was 44.

  • 1877

    The school became a state school in 1877. Its name changed to Tourello State School.

  • 1931

    The schoolhouse was replaced with a building from Hollingwood State School (No. 2576). The old school building was used as a community hall.

  • 1964

    The teacher's house was moved to Trawalla State School (No. 1150) in 1964.

  • 1970

    The name of the school changed to Tourello Primary School in 1970.

  • 1975

    Tourello Primary School closed in 1975.
