The history of Ballangeich State School

  • 1870s

Mrs G Fowle ran the first school in this area from her home, called Essex Hall.

She had between 12 and 15 students.

Mrs Fowle would sometimes close the school in the afternoon during harvest time.

This allowed the children to gather grain leftover from the harvest.

This practice is known as 'gleaning'.

Residents agreed to provide half the cost of building a new school.

The government provided the rest and supplied a paid teacher.

The stone school building opened in 1872.

The first head teacher was David Souter and his wife was the work mistress.

    There were 81 students enrolled.

  • 1920s

The school closed due to low student numbers.

  • 1946

    The school reopened.

  • 1964

    The school was unstaffed.

  • 1968

Due to low student numbers, it officially closed.

The last head teacher was Lesley D Sealey.
