The history of Corio Primary School

  • 1861

    The school opened in 1861. It was called Cowie's Creek when it first opened.

    The first head teacher was James Shugg and there were 45 students.

  • 1862

    The school became a common school in 1862.

  • 1864

    A bluestone schoolhouse was built.

  • 1870s

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1925

    The school was renamed Corio State School.

  • 1948

    The school closed in 1948. The 12 students that were enrolled at the school moved to Geelong North State School (No. 1889).

  • 1950

    The school reopened in 1950 because more families were moving into the area.

     

  • 1958

    Student numbers continued to increase and there were now 6 classrooms at the school.

  • 1970

    There were approximately 600 students enrolled in 1970.

    The school was renamed Corio Primary School.

  • 2010

    Corio Primary School closed and was combined with other schools in 2010 to form Northern Bay P-12 College (No. 8901).

    The following schools were combined:

    • Corio Bay Senior College (No. 7105)
    • Norlane Weest Primary School (No. 4880)
    • Corio Primary School (No. 124)
    • North Shore Primary School (No. 4301)
    • Norlane High School (No. 8175)
    • Corio South Primary School (No. 4927)
