The history of Lyndhurst State School

  • 1865

    Lyndhurst opened as a common school in 1865. It replaced Cranbourne Catholic School which had closed the year before.

    The first head teacher was Mr Johnstone. His wife, Mrs Johnson, was work mistress.

  • 1873

    The school became a state school in 1873.

  • 1887

    Because student numbers were low, classes were offered part-time. Lyndhurst shared a teacher with Skye State School (No. 1222). The teacher was Samuel Barclay and he split his time between both schools.

  • 1888

    Lyndhurst State School closed in 1888 because there were only 4 students.

    The head teacher, Samuel Barclay, then taught at Skye State School (No. 1222).
