The history of Mortlake Primary School

  • 1858

    Mortlake opened in 1858.

    The first head teacher was Richard Jackson, he remained the head teacher for 25 years.

    There were 13 students when the school opened and by the end of 1858 there were 40 students.

  • 1862

    The school became a common school in 1862.

  • 1870s

    The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

  • 1900

    A new and larger brick building was opened in 1900. This new building replaced the old bluestone schoolhouse which had become too small and run down.

  • 1939

    The school's Mothers' Club raised money for a memorial gate in memory of Miss Annie Cameron who had taught at the school for 33 years.

  • 1953

    A new library was built in 1953. This library was used by 9 other local schools.

  • 1958

    Memorial gates were built in 1958 to commemorate the school's 100 year anniversary.

    By 1958, the school buildings had grown to include 2 more classrooms, a staff room, an office for the principal and a multipurpose room.

  • 1968

    A tree plantation was planted in 1968. These trees would be sold when grown to raise money for the school.

  • 1970

    The school was renamed Mortlake Primary School in 1970.

  • 1993

    Mortlake Primary School closed in 1993 when it combined with Mortlake Secondary College (No. 8090) to form Mortlake P-12 College (No. 5376).
