The history of Springfield State School

  • 1870s

Springfield opened as a common school in 1871.

The first head teacher was Henry Jeffreys.

Classes were held in a timber schoolhouse with a shingle roof.

There was a house for the head teacher. It had 2 rooms.

The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

Another 2 rooms were added to the head teacher's house in 1877.

  • 1881

The schoolhouse was renovated. A porch was built, the inside walls were lined, and a ceiling was added.

  • 1904

Land was bought from a neighbour to increase the size of the school grounds.

  • 1906

The teacher's house at Forbes State School (No. 2000) was moved to Springfield for the head teacher. This house had 5 rooms.

  • 1908

The schoolhouse had become run down and was no longer safe. Classes were moved from the schoolhouse to a local church while a new timber schoolhouse was built. Parts of the old schoolhouse were used to make a shelter shed for the students and a wash house for the teacher's house.

  • 1920

A bathroom was added to the teacher's house in 1920.

Land was again bought from a neighbour to increase the size of the school grounds.

  • 1935

Because student numbers were low, the school became part-time and Springfield shared a teacher with Willowmavin State School (No. 3479). It shared its only teacher with Willowmavin and the teacher split their time between both schools.

  • 1963

    Springfield closed in 1963.
