The history of St Andrews Primary School

  • 1858

The school, originally known as Caledonia, was opened by the Church of England in 1858.

The teacher was Thomas Downward. The original school's name reflects its location at the Caledonian Diggings.

It was already locally known as St Andrews.

  • 1887

A wooden school building was finished.

  • 1892

Gold mining had declined, and a more settled community of fruit growers and farmers had taken over.

The average number of students was between 20 and 30.

Part of the wooden building was used as the teacher's house.

  • 1930s

A section of the school building became the infant room in the 1930s.

  • 1956

The name was changed to St Andrews. A new infant room was added in the same year.

  • 1962

During the centenary year (1962), a fire destroyed the school's timber plantation.

  • 1969

    A school oval was added.

  • 1970

The name of the school changed to St Andrews Primary School in 1970.

  • 1984

A new school was built on a new site.
