The history of Winters Flat Primary School

  • 1860

    Winters Flat opened as a national school.

    The teacher was John Stringer Gill. The school has over 50 students.

    Classes were held in a rented room.

  • 1862

    A new brick school building was built on Monaghan Street and finished in 1862. The school became a common school.

  • 1870s

    At some stage in the 1870s, Winters Flat became a state school.

  • 1878

    A recommendation was made to close the school. This was because Winters Flat was located close to other schools.

    Parents objected to the closure and the school remained open.

  • 1893

    The school became a part of Campbell's Creek State School (No. 120) in 1893.

    Many students had to travel to Campbell's Creek for classes.

    Only students in grades 1 and 2 continued to go to Winters Flat.

  • 1940s

    The school was considered for closure again in the 1940s. In 1942 Inspector Cox advised against closure.

  • 1945

    Inspector Cox was asked to review for closure again.

    The School Committee and Mothers' Club objected to the closure and the Director of Education didn't support the move. 

  • 1948

    A decision was made to continue classes for all grades at Winters Flat. 

  • 1964

    The Minister of Education officially opened a new six classroom school. 

    The new site was on Roberts Avenue. 

    The old building was demolished. The site became the school's timber plantation. 

    Winters Flat State School in the 1960s.
  • 1970

    The school's name changed to Winters Flat Primary School.

  • 1985

    1985 was the school's 125th anniversary.

    A history of the school was produced for the occasion. 

  • 2010

    Winter's Flat marked its 150th anniversary with the opening of the Creekview building. 

  • 2018

    A new building was added to allow for more students.

  • 2022

    Winters Flat Primary School is still in operation.
