Congratulations to our ResourceSmart School Awards winners

On Thursday 15 June 2023, the 2023 ResourceSmart Schools Awards celebrated Victorian schools achieving great things in sustainability, recognising 12 Victorian schools with awards in a ceremony at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The event is Victoria’s largest sustainability awards for schools, and it shines a light on the positive work schools are doing to protect the environment.  

With achievements spanning waste reduction and litter monitoring, energy and water saving and the creation of kitchen gardens and wetlands, this year’s winners have demonstrated remarkable sustainability leadership.

More than 260 school children, teachers and school volunteers attended the event, with the ResourceSmart School of the Year award going to Eastwood Primary School and Deaf Facility.

Matt Genever, Sustainability Victoria’s interim chief executive officer, was eager to congratulate all students, school staff and volunteers for their achievements, and said they are all tremendous role models for sustainability action in the education community.

‘Thrilled’ school of the year

Eastwood Primary School teacher Megan Moore said the school is absolutely thrilled to win Resourcesmart School of the Year. 

‘We have been working hard to embed sustainability in all aspects of school life over several years and this award recognises our efforts and achievements. 

‘Resourcesmart Schools is a fabulous framework for schools to base their sustainability work on. We are very thankful to our Resourcesmart facilitators, school community, staff and our amazing students,’ Megan said.

About the ResourceSmart Schools program

The ResourceSmart Schools program provides practical support to schools to reduce resource use, make cost savings, integrate sustainability into the curriculum and share what they’ve learned beyond the school gate.

Since it was established in 2008, more than 1,400 schools have participated in the program, helping to: 

• save more than $41 million on bills 
• reduce more than 118,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases through energy, water and waste efficiency
• divert 194,000 cubic metres of waste from landfill 
• plant more than 5 million trees.
